IAN MCKAY: ARTIST & CREATOR
My work offers a chance to explore my interests through visual storytelling, using a variety of media, including paint, print, and photography. With a process rooted in keen observation, I aim to engage the viewer and shed light on the subjects represented in my pieces. Central to my practice is creating a connection and dialogue between my childhood memories, the erased and hidden architectural past, and my intention to capture a fleeting sense of place in ever-changing locations.
Through an experimental approach, I delve into each concept to produce visual interpretations that reflect the subject matter. The fluidity of my work, combined with its haunting sense of presence, seeks to evoke a sense of place, poignantly portraying the themes of loss, isolation, and space inherent in these locations.
My journey as an artist has taken me to international exhibitions as I continue to develop my painterly voice.
Inspiration for my practice comes from a wide range of artists, photographers, and filmmakers. Influences include painters such as Turner, Matisse, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, and Francis Bacon, Corita Kent and photographers like Tony Ray-Jones and Martin Parr, and filmmakers such as Terence Davies and Ken Loach.
